Gorenjska
and Soča Valley
Kranjska Gora–Vršič–Kobarid–Most
na Soči
The bus will leave for the
Kranjska Gora ski centre. After a short stop, we will head for
the mountains, towards the Vršič pass (5 285 ft, 1161 m) and
enjoy stunning views of the Julian Alps along the way. A brief
stop at the Russian Chapel will recall the memory of Russian
prisoners of war who died in a winter avalanche during the road
maintenance in 1916. We will also learn the legend of the
Ajdovska deklica (the maiden whose face turned to stone) and
continue on to Kobarid for lunch and more sightseeing. After a
visit to the Kobarid necropolis and WWI memorial (kostnica) we
will proceed to Kobarid museum dedicated to the battles on the
Isonzo front. Our last activity will include a steam boat ride
on Soča river.
DID YOU KNOW ...
... that
during the First World War the important front line known as the
Isonzo (Soča) Front ran across Slovene territory? The famous
novel A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway takes place here. |
