Karst, Coast and Istria

Postojna Cave–Sečovlje–Portorož–Piran

Our first stop will be at the world famous Postojna Cave with its unique endemic inhabitant – the human fish. The program will then lead us to Sečovlje Nature Park, which covers about 650 ha. Here salt is still harvested in the traditional 14th-century way, but mostly as a tourist attraction. After a typical Istrian meal, we will visit an ethnological museum, the Toni House (Tonina hiša). Among other things, we will be shown how olive oil is produced. After briefly stopping in Portorož, Slovenia’s best known seaside resort, we will head towards the harbour town of Piran and enjoy a stroll through the old town.

DID YOU KNOW ...
... that the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park is cited on the UNESCO list of wetlands of international importance? Today the abandoned salt works areas are a treasury of plant and animal life, including the Etruscan shrew, the smallest mammal in the world.
