Where
Lace Meets Quicksilver
Idrija–Cerkno–Škofja Loka
Our first stop will be in the
Idrija City Museum, which houses the lace-making, mining,
geological and historical collections. A short video about
mining will introduce our descent to the actual mine, the oldest
in Slovenia, which was opened to tourism in 1994. After a meal
including a traditional dish (žlikrofi), we will continue to
Cerkno for a visit to the Franja Partisan Hospital, built during
WWII at a secret location. It ensured basic medical treatment
for the resistance forces and is an authentic monument of its
time. Before concluding the trip, we will stroll trough the Škofja
Loka old town.
DID YOU KNOW ...
... that lace-making
has a long tradition in Slovenia? The tradition of the Idrija
lace is preserved through a special lace-making school, which
was established in 1876. Each year, Idrija organises an
international lace festival. |
