Ptuj
and the Jeruzalem Wine Trail
Ptuj–Ormož–Jeruzalem–Križevci
Passing Slovenska Bistrica, we
will head for Ptuj, the oldest Slovenian town. The history of
Ptuj stretches back to the Neolithic, and through Celtic and
Noric times. We will start by entering Ptuj Castle, which houses
several interesting museum collections. Among the exhibits, we
will find costumes of the “kurent”, a typical mythological
creature with the power of chasing winter away and inviting
spring. After lunch in Jeruzalem, the heart of the Prlekija
region, we will visit a wine cellar and taste local wines. Our
next stop will be in Križevci at a domestic producer of pumpkin
seed oil, which will also be possible to buy. Finally, we will
look into a genuine, still operating flour mill on the Mura.
DID YOU KNOW ...
... that the
most famous Slovene carnival figure is the “kurent”? The
presence of this traditional figure drives away winter and
brings good fortune. Kurents can be very loud, since carry cow
bells around their waist. |
