Savinjska and Logarska valleys

Šempeter–Logarska Valley

We will head to Šempeter in the Savinjska Valley and visit the Roman Necropolis, one of Slovenia’s finest archeological sites; over 600 items and more than 100 family tombs were excavated here. After that, we will also explore the nearby Pekel Cave. In winter the inside of the cave is warmer than the outside, and steam can be seen rolling from the cave’s entrance; with some imagination, one can discern an image of the devil above the cave entrance. In the past, that made people afraid of the cave, hence its name – Pekel (meaning Hell).

We will continue towards Logarska Valley, one of Slovenia’s most beautiful Alpine valleys and the winner of the European Destination of Excellence title. After lunch we will continue the panoramic drive along the valley to the 295 ft (90 m) high Rinka Falls. These will astonish us by the mere sight of crystal water, as well as by the fact that it disappears into the gravel underneath the falls and emerges in the middle of Logarska Valley as the Savinja spring. On the way back, we will stop to sample a variety of cheeses at one of the dairy farms.

DID YOU KNOW ...
… that one of the important crops in the Savinjska Valley is hops, a small genus of flowering plants that is used as a culinary flavouring and stabilizer, especially in the brewing of beer? It is also referred to as green gold.
